What Do They Want to Transform?

"If you love something, why would you want to transform it?" asks Dennis Prager in this column.  He uses this analogy to reinforce his point.  "If you met a man who said he would like to "transform" or "remake" his wife, would you conclude that he: a) thought very highly of his wife and loved her? Or b) held his wife in rather low esteem and therefore found loving her rather difficult?"  The answer is obvious says Prager, "Those who wish to remake anything (or anyone) do not think highly of the person or thing they wish to remake."

The transformation that Prager discusses in his column gets to the heart of something that has bothered me since last summer.  We obviously have different problems across the United States and implementing new policies (or preferably eliminating some policies) is part of the representative process we have.  But to suggest that our country needs to be remade implies that there is something dramatically wrong that requires transformation.  This criticism of our country is offensive to the Forgotten Man and is one key reason I have been so disappointed in our new President.

I consider the country already remade multiple times over. That said, what the left is proposing is simply a continuation of the remaking that took place during the New Deal. I'll gladly embrace remaking the country if it means a return to federalism and limited government, sadly I doubt the president wants that kind of remaking.
