Get Your Pocketbooks Ready

As we watch government spending rise exponentially, those of us in flyover country have been waiting for the other shoe to fall.  Someone has to pay for all of this and we know who it is.  Pete Du Pont writes here about all of the tax increases that are moving their way through Congress. Just to list a few:

  • Cigarettes (already enacted)
  • Alcohol
  • Sugary drinks (ie Pepsi and Coke)
  • Expiration of the 2003 tax reduction (this will raise our taxes by 10%!)
  • Congressman Rangel's health care surtax
  • Congressman Waxman's cap and trade tax schemes
  • American companies doing business in other countries.
  • Raising or abolishing the wage cap on Social Security taxes
  • Reducing the tax benefit for itemized deductions like charitable contributions
  • HSA's
  • Comparative effectiveness research (more government panels)
  • Not having health insurance (my personal favorite.  The house bill actually wants to tax you if you choose not to have health insurance!) 
This list makes King George III seem like a supply sider!
