The Forgotten Man always loves to see competition, so this story about Texas vs California caught my eye. Michael Barone, one of my favorite writers
pens this summary about more people moving to Texas while there is a mass exodus from California. Why is Texas winning this battle? California has gone for big government in a big way, while Texas has low taxes -- and no state income taxes -- and a much smaller government. Its legislature meets for only 90 days every two years, compared to California's year-round legislature. Its fiscal condition is sound. Public employee unions are weak or nonexistent.
The Forgotten Man has written about other states that are losing residents by the thousands due to high taxes and big government spending. Barone points out that California lost 1,509,000 people from 2000 to 2009 while Texas gained 848,000 people. More people means more businesses, more jobs and more total tax revenue. Seems like a blowout for Texas.
