Bloomington Chickens Out

Under the category of you can't make it up, it turns out that Bloomington (3rd largest city in Minnesota) actually allows homeowners to keep a chicken roost.  But this citizen apparently is in violation.  I tried to think of a pithy comment about this situation, but the actual testimony in front of the Bloomington city council cannot be improved upon.

Speaker #1: Jean Mellem & Todd Topel, 10229 Colorado Rd. appeared to state they had received a notice from the City informing them they were in violation of the City’s ordinance regarding chickens and honey bees. They described how they keep their chickens and stated the problem is they cannot meet the City’s setback requirements for a chicken coop due to their lot size. As a result, they requested the Council consider changing its ordinance to reduce the setback requirements.

Speaker #2: Margo Roberts, 10221 Colorado Rd. appeared to state her support of her neighbors and their chickens. She stated the chickens don’t make much noise and they don’t smell. She enjoys having them next door.

Speaker #3: Jane Udlinek, 11039 Stanley Curve added her support for allowing chickens. She stated it’s nice to have some "country" in the city.
