The Harm of Hope and Change

Voting for hope and change seemed like a harmless way to make things better in America.  But as Charles Krauthammer writes here, the decisions a President makes and the messages he sends can have long lasting consequences for our nation.  For example, how one treats your allies can have long lasting effects on foreign policy and the way we are treating our oldest, strongest and most reliable ally doesn't bode well for the future.  Krauthammer reminds us of all of the slights President Obama has made towards Great Britain since he has been in office:

1. Returning the Churchill bust that was in the Oval Office. (If it absolutely had to be out of Obama's sight, could it not have been housed somewhere else on U.S. soil rather than ostentatiously repatriated?)

2. The State Department official who last year denied there even was a special relationship between the U.S. and Britain, a relationship cultivated by every U.S. president since Franklin Roosevelt.

3. Hillary Clinton's astonishing, nearly unreported calling for Britain to negotiate with Argentina over the Falklands, reopening an issue that had been settled for almost 30 years.

4. The insulting gifts of an Ipod and DVD's to the Queen and Prime Minister.

Any of these alone may be considered a gaffe, but in total send a message to the ally that "today has about 10,000 troops, far more than any other ally, fighting alongside America in Afghanistan" is embarrassing at best and dangerous at worst.  President Obama promised he would restore our standing in the world, yet he is insulting our greatest ally and seems to be moving away from them.  This doesn't seem like a good idea and President Obama would do well to reconsider his (or more accurately our) loyalties,
